Brian Schmidt added great bass lines that transformed the music. If all games in an arcade are set at approximately the same volume, you can hear the vocal chorus (“You’ve got the Power, You’ve got the might…) cutting through everything else in the arcade. I also wanted the sound & music package to stand out in a loud arcade. I wanted the music to be fast and furious to inspire players. I wrote most of the music as chord progressions first, and then added some leads and riffs to the main songs of the game. IGN: What was the inspiration for the Black Knight 2000 theme song? How was it written? Steve Ritchie: I wanted music that made me feel energized and excited, laced with urgency and drive. BKSOR is a true battle game, and the music reinforces our feelings of urgency and the need to stay alert and play hard to beat the Black Knight. It totally rocks! The first time we played the music through our game, everyone in engineering gathered around the game and marveled at Scott’s powerful and driving music. He has performed his own rendition of the BK2K music in his incredible style. The music in the new game, Black Knight: Sword of Rage, features music composed and performed by Scott Ian, of Anthrax. ![]() IGN: I heard it in the trailer but will the Black Knight 2000 theme song be returning in the game itself? Steve Ritchie: The original Black Knight 2000 music is returning to the game in a special retro mode. IGN: What's one thing pinball can't do now, tech-wise, but you hope it will do someday? Steve Ritchie: Controllable levitating balls would be incredible! I wish it were possible for the player to move the ball in mid-air an inch or more above the playfield. The Magna Save feature is back, giving players a chance to save a draining ball skillfully. This is the first time in the BK series that you actually battle the Black Knight and his evil Minions. ![]() When the Black Knight speaks, RGB LED’s modulate his words in colors behind his helmet vents, and he has 2 independently controlled LED eyes. Both are weapons that can throw the ball back at the player when activated. He spins a bi-directional Flail in his right hand and a shield in his left hand that snaps up and down to guard a ball-lock VUK. It’s probably the best looking and best-integrated toy we have done at Stern. IGN: What's your favorite interactive feature or toy in the new game and why? Steve Ritchie: The Black Knight toy is central to the game. Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies (a pinball fanatic who I can personally vouch for as I've seen him in my local arcade, twice) also provides voice work along with Steve Ritchie who reprises his role as the Black Knight. That theme is back in a "retro mode," according to Steve Ritchie. And shredding is really the only way to describe the guitar licks in the original Black Knight 2000 soundtrack, an awesome digitized metal feat at the time that can be heard high above the din of an arcade.
